When creating your Website feels Overwhelming

if you’ve been feeling stuck with launching or updating your website, this one’s for you...

Let me first acknowledge that what you’re feeling is so very natural, especially for a soulful depth-worker like you. While it’s easy enough to slap together a generic, vanilla, AI-assisted website, your commitment to depth, authenticity and beauty can make (re)launching your website feel like an humungous endeavor.

  • Maybe you DIY’d a website several years ago, but you’ve grown and evolved so much that the dissonance you feel with your website is creating an energetic block.

  • Maybe you’re struggling to find the right words to express the depth and magic of your work, and that’s keeping you (re)launching your site.

  • Maybe your work is so deeply entwined with your heart and soul, that telling the truth of who you are through your website feels stretchy and vulnerable.

  • Maybe the big, beautiful vision you have for your work feels too heavy to hold sometimes, and that’s keeping you from moving forwards.

  • Maybe you keep comparing yourself to other practitioners, wondering how your voice or offerings can possibly stand out.

  • Maybe wrapping your head around the visuals, words, tech and strategy of creating a website just all feels too much right now…

If any of this sounds like you, here are some ideas and encouragement I’d like to share:

(1) launch your website in phases

Rather than tackling all your offerings and your visuals and your SEO at once, it might feel more manageable to launch your website in phases. That might look like:

  • Launching your core offering in Phase 1, and having a ‘coming soon’ button or waitlist for the course / podcast / retreat you’re dreaming up in Phase 2.

  • Launching with a simple ‘Join my email community’ sign up form in Phase 1, and integrating that lovely meditation or PDF you’re working on in Phase 2.

  • Treating yourself to beautiful brand photos for an immediate visual upgrade in Phase 1, and refine your messaging and offerings in Phase 2.

  • Supercharging your headlines in Phase 1, refining your copy in Phase 2, and diving into your SEO and legal pages in Phase 3!

Now, I’m the first to admit that I like everything to be JUUUUST so when it comes to my websites, and it’s of course important to feel enough alignment before launching. And so, rather than compromising on quality, there might be ways you can lighten up on quantity (the scope of your site). Think about the offering(s), page(s), or action(s) that matter most to you and your business right now, and allow yourself to roll out the rest in phases.

(1I) Launch a one-page website

I LOVE this as a solution because it allows you to distill all your key content into a single page ‘Lite Site’ to make launching that much easier. This might be all you need for a while, or you might use it to tide you over while you gently build out your inner pages.

I sometimes offer Lite Site’s as part of my Brand & Website Therapy offering, and have included a Lite Site page in my Squarespace Templates for depth-workers, complete with built-in copy guides and training videos. With a Lite Site, you could literally launch your website in a matter of days, without compromising on visual and emotional impact.

(III) use my (FREE!) blueprint

If you don’t need or want to purchase my website templates, but are feeling a little lost when it comes to organising your pages and expressing your offerings, you are SO welcome to use my templates as a visual and verbal guide for your website!

Having worked as a therapist myself, and created 100+ websites for depth-workers over the last decade, I’ve developed a website blueprint that’s specifically designed to hold the emotional depth and strategic needs of deeply relational businesses. This is the exact blueprint that my templates - and most of my custom websites - are built on.

Just click into the template below and use the built-in copy guides and sections layouts as a guide for your own website. If you want to better understand the visual and energetic strategy at play, check out my Website Principles post.

(IV) let it be lighter

When we’re doing work that matters deeply to us, work that can change lives, work that our livelihoods depend on - creating a website to hold it all can feel rather heavy! Here are a few reminders to help lighten things up a bit:

(1) Write the way you speak.

Some of us experience a sort of stage-fright when it comes to writing our website. We might seize up or feel self-conscious. We might dilute ourselves into something more ‘professional’ or ‘palatable’. But your website is simply an extension of you. Being in your website should simply feel like being in a room with you. So, imagine you’re sitting across from your favourite kind of client, and write the way you would speak to them, with your natural warmth / quirkiness / straight-shooting humor!

(II) Meet your reader where she’s at today.

It can feel overwhelming to try and fit all that you want to say into your website, with all the knowledge, complexity and nuance that comes with it. But your website is just the start of a longer conversation. It is an invitation to take the next step with you - be it a Discovery Call, your podcast, or your offerings. Yes, we need to be resonant enough to move our readers, but we don’t need to express everything in one go. That would be overwhelming for you and for your reader! So think about where your reader’s at today - what does she most need to know, feel, and believe at THIS point in her journey with you? If you have a few moments to express that to her, what and how would say it?

(III) Let it be a work-in-progress.

Because you’re a work-in-progress too! We all are! In fact, your website should change and evolve alongside you. There’s no such thing as ‘the perfect copy’, and nothing that you write is set in stone. Just feel the love in your heart for your person, write to them like you’d speak, and follow my blueprint if you need some prompts or guidance!

(V) gift yourself some support

Of course, if you’d like some deeper holding - someone to help you untangle your thoughts, find the hidden gems and golden threads in your work, and weave it all into a brand and website that truly feels like home - I’m here for you. Both my Brand Therapy and Website Therapy offerings come with Lite and Deep options, and we can jump on a free, pressure-free call to explore what makes the most sense for you.
